Applying for Portuguese Número de Identificação Fiscal (NIF) or Fiscal number: A Step-by-Step Guide

Portuguese Número de Identificação Fiscal (NIF)

The Número de Identificação Fiscal (NIF) or Portuguese fiscal number is one of the most important documents required for starting your residency in Portugal. In this blog, I will guide you through all the steps for requesting NIF in Portugal.

What is NIF?

The Número de Identificação Fiscal (NIF) is a personal fisal identification number which is essential for acts related to the acquisition of goods or services, contracts, opening bank accounts, including others. A foreign person, resident or non-resident in Portugal, who works and pays taxes in Portugal must have a Tax Identification Number (NIF). This NIF is also necessary for for the children and young people for the health and education expenses which can be included in Parent’s Personal Income Tax (IRS) declaration.

Usuallly two cases are seen in case of NIF application.

Scenario 1: The applicant has the Portuguese visa in his/her passport and living in a temporary place and looking for a permanent address. In this case, he can go to any of the available Financas office near the current living place. And, the officers issues attributes a NIF number to him/her. In this scenario, the address in the NIF document is same as stated in his passport.

Scenario 2: Only the thing that differs this scenario from the other one is the possession of a document proving his/her current living place in Portugal. This document is issued by Junta de Freguesia. The freguesia  is an admisnitrative unit of the Portuguese administration. If someone has already have a Junta letter, he can present this to the respective officer of Financas along with other required documents and the given NIF document will have the proof of address itself. This document is accepted on the biometric appointment date of the applicant.

Required documents for both cases:

To apply for a NIF, you need the following documents:

  • 1. Resident in Portugal – civil identification document from the country of origin or passport* and residence permit
  • 2. Non-resident in Portugal – identification document or passport with the *valid visa stamp for Portugal* and have a *tax representative* (individual or collective) holding the residence card of Portugal*.
  • 3. Child without passport – document proving birth.

In the following post, I will cover more issues like registering and requesting Finance password, change of address, Adding family member etc.

Till then, take care!!

Wish everyone a smooth journey regarding Portuguese NIF application.
